Rattlesnake Traverse – 03-18-2012

Two weekends stuck in town. March 3-4 I was on-call. March 10-11 I was in the classroom at the Mountaineers taking AFA Wilderness First Aid (RMI) in preparation for Hike Leader approval.

At last I can get out into the wilderness this weekend. Fran Holme, Lisa Grayson, Siv Hjorth and I completed the Rattlesnake Ridge Traverse early this year. Trail was mostly compact snow. From East Peak to Prospect Point we had to break trail for about 3 miles. Siv Hjorth left her snowshoes at the car, so I know this is possible to do without shoes – providing one is following about three folks with snowshoes breaking trail. Overall a great day – even had an overhead sun break at the summit of East Peak where we stopped for lunch. Foot traction required for the compact snow sections of the trail. We also met a snow goddess on the way down!
